Swans keen to appease Roos
Jarrad McVeigh says Paul Roos seems calm when seen on television but is capable of turning up the heat on his players when they underperform
McVeigh told Melbourne radio station SEN that after performances such as last week’s defeat to Adelaide, when the Swans managed just six goals for the match, Roos was capable of delivering a hefty verbal spray to his players.
“If you look at him on TV he’s quite calm but we do cop a spray on Monday if all our indicators are down,” he sheepishly admitted.
“You know it’s really meaningful [coming from Roos].”
Last Monday morning’s tape was difficult for the Swans players to sit through and McVeigh described the footage as “embarrassing to watch”.
The Swans are looking to break their form slump against the Bulldogs, who themselves have been struggling of late with losses in their last two games. McVeigh is aware of how important the fixture is for both clubs.
“It’s second versus fourth; a huge game and we’ve got the opportunity now we’re in fourth position [to stay there] but we’ve got a bit of a tough month ahead,” he said.
The “tough month”, which includes games against Fremantle, Geelong, Collingwood and the Brisbane Lions, will be made even harder due to injuries to Adam Goodes, Michael O’Loughlin and Nick Malceski.
Leo Barry will also miss Sunday’s clash.
“We have never been in this situation before [with injuries] but we do have a lot of younger guys coming in who are doing jobs … so hopefully we’ve got that depth there,” explained McVeigh.
