The Sydney Swans reserves marked their return to the SCG with a comprehensive performance against Queanbeyan, recording a 188-point victory over their Eastern Conference opponents.
The Swans hadn’t played on the SCG since they beat Tuggeranong by 111 points on April 29, and they wasted little time replicating that form in perfect conditions for attacking football.
With Mike Pyke returning to the side from a quad injury sustained in the seniors round 7 win over the Western Bulldogs, the Swans midfield gained first use of the ball out of the center right from the opening bounce. Nathan Gordon, Byron Sumner, and Luke Parker (playing from the defensive side of the contest) feasted on the opportunities presented by ruckmen Pyke and Daniel Currie, and continuously drove the ball inside the forward 50.
In a dominant season to date, the Swans put in arguably their best half of football in the first half of the game - kicking 21 goals for the half, including a 14 goal second quarter, and moving the ball around the ground with pinpoint precision.
Jarred Moore set the tone early for the team, showing brilliant attacking instincts leading out from the forward 50, and involving himself in the majority of the Swans opening goals. Moore finished the day with three goals, but proved playmaker for countless others.
Trent Dennis-Lane capitalised on the delivery coming from the midfield and converted 9 goals to be the leading goalkicker on the ground. Dennis-Lane was consistently able to find space in the forward fifty, and once he found a yard on his opponent, he made them pay on the scoreboard through his accurate kicking for goal - especially in the first half where eight of his goals came.
After being one of the catalysts in the Swans midfield in the first half, Gordon drifted forward more as the game progressed and ended up booting seven goals. In his first season at the Club, Matt Spangher had his best outing as a Swan. He took several strong marks, looked comfortable at ground level, and kicked accurately for his six goals.
The Swans travel to the nation’s capital next Saturday as they take on Tuggeranong at Greenway Oval from 2pm.
