The Sydney Swans Football Club is mourning the passing of former player Merv Neagle, following his tragic death today, aged 54.
Neagle was an outstanding player when he joined the Sydney Swans in 1986 after 147 matches with Essendon. He played 56 matches in five seasons with the Swans, before retiring in 1990.
Sydney Swans Deputy Chairman Andrew McMaster said Merv would be fondly remembered for his time at the Club.
“Merv was one of football’s great characters. He was a fantastic Clubman and strong on-field leader,” McMaster said.
“While injury restricted him in the latter part of his career, Merv played some outstanding football with the Swans.
“He was a big game player and his 1986 finals series with the Swans was brilliant. He was tough, a great ball carrier and could go forward and kick a goal,” McMaster said.
The Club extends its deepest sympathies to Merv’s wife Donna and his five children, Jay, 24, Jydon, 17, Nathan, 16, Matthew,14, and Jaxon, 12.
