While the Swans 2012 Grand Final victory will be forever etched in the minds of all Sydney fans, a group of Swans supporters won the rare opportunity to experience the event from ground level.
Thanks to the AFL, 50 Sydney Swans members had the chance to set foot on the MCG’s hallowed turf before the opening bounce and take part in a very special Grand Final ‘team’ photograph.
While being chosen was the ‘luck of the draw’, the very special experience was in recognition of all Sydney Swans members’ support, dedication and loyalty throughout the 2012 season.
Although the Swans victory on the last Saturday in September was the culmination of the players’ hard work on-field, Swans coach John Longmire said the Swans fans support all season also contributed to getting the team over the line on Grand Final day.
“We went down to Melbourne and saw the Grand Final parade and the players commented that there was probably more red and white in the streets, which was unbelievable to see,” he said.
“Then we went to the game and in the grand stands of 100,000 people there was plenty of red and white and they certainly helped us.
“We also know that whether it’s at ANZ Stadium or the SCG, when we get this place pumping with the red and white, the players really find something.
“I’ve got no doubt (the fans) helped us get over the line and may we see you all here next year.”
The Grand Final ‘team’ photo was not the only unique opportunity for Sydney Swans members this season.
Just a month prior to the Grand Final, a group of dedicated members who attended all 11 home games this year had the chance to take home a special memento.
The chosen group of supporters had their loyalty and support rewarded when they were presented with a worn match guernsey, which was signed by the respective player.
The guernseys the supporters received were worn in the Swans round 15 win over the Brisbane Lions at the SCG in July.
