Second year player Luke Parker has been honoured with the Cathy Lees Award, given in memory of the passionate Sydney Swans supporter who died of cancer.

Each year Cathy’s father, Alan, donates a trophy awarded to one of the rising talents at the Swans.

Last year it was Sam Reid, who went on to have a breakout season at centre half forward before signing a five year deal with the Club.

On Monday, Parker, the solidly built 20-year-old midfielder, was presented with the trophy by Alan, in front of his team-mates and coaches.

“It’s a real honour to receive this award,’’ Luke said.

“Last year Sam received it and looking at how far he’s gone since last year …. Hopefully I can do the same. I really appreciated being given the award.’’

After being drafted in 2010, Parker developed very quickly last year and played 13 games. In his very first game, he started as the substitute. Then, when it was time to come, the coaches showed their faith in him by sending him straight into the centre square for the bounce.

This year, Parker aims to get more time in the middle. “My goal is to play round one and I want to cement my spot in the senior team and play as many games as I can,’’ Parker said.

To achieve his aim, Parker has worked hard this pre-season to improve his endurance.

“My fitness was the main thing (I’ve worked on). I really want to push into the midfield and secure a spot in there.

“If I’m able to get into the midfield more, then you can play more game time so that’s a strength if I’m able to be on the field a bit more.’’

He’s been doing all the right things, and it’s paying off.

“My body is holding up and I’ve run a few PB’s. That was basically my goal at the start of the pre-season so I can’t wait till the games start.’’

Parker is also looking forward to the upcoming Fan Days, which are being held in both Melbourne and Sydney.

Melbourne fans can meet the players on Saturday February 25, between 9am and noon, at Aanenson Oval, Murphy Reserve, Williamstown Rd, Port Melbourne. It’s free, and open to all Swans fans.

Fans in Sydney can meet the players on Saturday  March 10, between 11am and 2pm, at the SCG. Entry is via Gate A.
