Swans reserves roll Ainslie
The Sydney Swans reserves proved too strong for Ainslie on Saturday, running out 74-point victors
A 12-goal first half set up the reserves for their seventh win of the season, with twin towers Tommy Walsh (seven goals) and Jesse White (four goals) doing the majority of the damage on the scoreboard for the Swans.
Strong defence from rookie Xavier Richards earned him best on ground honours, while Tom Mitchell, who travelled to Melbourne as an emergency for the senior side, continued his good form in Canberra and notched up another 30-plus possession game.
Following his ten-goal haul against Queanbeyan last week, White picked up where he left off kicking three first-quarter goals to help the Swans reserves to a 28-point lead at quarter time.
While the Swans talls proved dominant up forward, speedsters Brandon Jack and Jake Lloyd were also impressive and provided the team with plenty of outside run and sharp delivery into the forward 50.
Repelling play across half-back from Tony Armstrong, Dean Towers and Alex Brown resulted in Ainslie being held goalless at half time, while White and Walsh continued their dominance as the visitors piled on seven more goals to hold a 70-point lead at the long break.
Following a one-sided first half, the Tricolours were much more competitive in the third term, limiting the Swans to just two goals, and adding their first two goals of the game in the quarter.
After the even third quarter, Swans reserves coach Jared Crouch gave his team the rev up they needed and they responded with a five-goal final term.
Lloyd and Harry Marsh added their names to the team’s goal kickers’ list, while White and Walsh finished the match the way they started it, with Walsh kicking two last quarter goals to notch up seven for the match.
In what was a terrific win for the team, the reserves did suffer one injury, with rookie Dan Robinson helped from the ground with a lower leg injury in the third term.
