Goodes to miss Blues clash
Sydney Swans coach John Longmire says Adam Goodes will miss Friday night's clash against Carlton
The two-time Brownlow medallist suffered the injury in the third quarter of the Port match and was subbed out of the game at three-quarter-time.
Swans coach John Longmire confirmed this afternoon that the 331-gamer had suffered a posterior cruciate ligament injury and would miss this week’s round 14 match against the Blues.
“Unfortunately he won’t play this week,” Longmire said.
“He hurt his posterior ligament - not the one hurt in the Grand Final, the other one.
“It could have been a lot worse and we don’t take the decision to sub Goodesy lightly when the game is in the balance like it was at three-quarter time, but clearly he was sore and restricted by it.
“He misses, I’m hoping, only the one week.”
Goodes has been an important player for the Swans over the last month, kicking ten goals across the last four games, and Longmire says his players would need to step up in the champion’s absence.
“He’s played pretty good footy the last few weeks and he’s obviously an important player for us whether that’s midfield or forward, but he’s out of the team this week,” Longmire said.
“We’ll get another player in who will hopefully play well for us and we’ll restructure the team and look at the way we need to play against Carlton and deal with the facts in front of us.”
Goodes’ injury is yet another blow for the Swans, who have already been hit by a wave of injuries to key senior players including Rhyce Shaw (abdominal), Lewis Roberts-Thomson (knee), Shane Mumford (cheekbone) and Alex Johnson (knee).
Longmire also confirmed that the Swans would again be without attacking duo Sam Reid (quad) and Lewis Jetta (shin) for Friday night’s match with the Blues, although Andrejs Everitt (Achilles) was the most likely candidate to return from injury this week.
“Reid and Jetta won’t play and Everitt is a chance,” Longmire said.
“Probably out of the blokes who are out of the team, Everitt is probably the one that we may get back.”
With so much senior experience out of the team, Longmire said it was the responsibility of the Swans’ best 22 to shoulder the load this weekend.
“Someone told me before that it’s about 1100 games of experience out of the team, but that’s what happens and you’ve got to deal with it, and you’ve got to make sure that the players that come in play a really good role and that’s what we’ve been able to do to this point,” Longmire said.
“The players who are good senior players have to carry the load as well and generally to this point we’ve been pretty good at covering for those.
“We’ve also introduced some good young kids as well including players like (Dane) Rampe who have done a really good job for us.
“We need to make sure we keep unearthing that next group of players that come in and continue to get some real depth in our squad.”
