The Sydney Swans suffered a nail biting two-point defeat to Fremantle at Optus Stadium on Saturday night in Round 10 of the competition.
Sydney won three quarters of the clash, however a crucial third quarter saw the home side turn a 15-point deficit into a 13-point lead.
John Longmire said he was frustrated by the side’s performance in the crucial quarter, however said the side still had their opportunities in the final stages to close out the game.
“It’s frustrating. If you just look at the pure scores, we won three quarters and lost the third badly,” Longmire said in his post match press conference.
“We let too many inside 50’s go and we thought during the course of the game they were able to put forward half pressure on us and we couldn’t exit as well as what we would of liked.”
“You get to that point in the last quarter, a couple of times we hit the front and then we had a chance in the last minute or so to get one over the top and kick that one,” he added.
Longmire paid Fremantle credit for their third quarter turn around, pinpointing the differences in contested marks and possession as crucial statistics.
“I thought they were good, you have to give some credit to Fremantle. They were very good in that quarter, you have to give some credit to the opposition,” Longmire said.
“The ball lived in their half, they took 6 contested marks where we took zero, and they were able to win the 50-50s, break even in front of the ball or win those contests, keep the ball in their front half and we weren’t able to do the same thing.”
“We got smacked in contested possession by 20 for the quarter and that will generally do it. It took us too long to reset at three quarter time, we just didn’t fix it during the course of that quarter.”
Forward Lance Franklin had an impressive six-goal performance, including three goals from beyond 50m.
Longmire praised his forward who had a big impact in front of a vocal Perth crowd.
“He was fantastic. As far as getting a couple of games under his belt now, and getting a bit more training and had a run around yesterday and said he felt good, it was just good to see him in that sort of form,” Longmire said.
Ruckman Tom Hickey played on after an early knock to his knee, which had him hobbled for periods through the game. However he said it was not the first time Hickey had been troubled by the knock.
He also provided an update on defender Robbie Fox who suffered a scratched eyeball and was substituted by Ryan Clarke during the clash.
“It’s happened a couple of times since he has got back from his PCL injury,” Longmire said on Hickey.
“It has happened in the last couple of weeks, and it was just a period of time that hurts him for a patch and then he is able to get going and get through it, and hopefully it happens less and less as his knee gets stronger.”
“We just finished the game but we think he will be right. It has happened before.”
“He [Fox] had a scratched eyeball so he probably goes off to hospital. Unfortunately, losing him threw us out a little bit,” Longmire added.
