Third time unlucky for Pat
Young forward Pat Veszpremi is in the midst of his third rehad stint in as many years
Veszpremi, 19, is in the midst of his third rehab stint in as many years after a serious finger injury in March derailed a promising pre-season.
He attempted a tackle during a NAB Challenge clash at AAMI Stadium and his finger got caught in his opponent's jumper.
"I think that just pulled it out and overstretched it. I felt like I'd just jarred my finger but after a while I realised I couldn't bend my finger from the tip, which meant I'd torn a ligament and I had no control over it," Veszpremi said.
"My whole pre-season I was pretty much injury-free and then to have that happen just before round one was pretty disappointing."
He underwent surgery to repair the damage and a two-month recovery period beckoned.
Having spent extended periods on the sidelines in the past two years through shoulder and groin problems, Veszpremi knew what he was in for and adjusted his attitude accordingly.
"I had high expectations for this year. In your second year at the club, you want to have a big impact," he said.
"When you're training on different days to the senior team, you don't really feel a part of it. You find yourself running by yourself sometimes and it's just really frustrating.
"But you've just got to do it and change your whole mindset to focus on what you need to do every day. You focus on little things, rather than the big picture. It's a bit hard when the seniors are playing, though."
Veszpremi, who managed six senior games despite his injury setbacks in 2008, said he was envious of other players who had managed to string together successive games at the start of their careers.
"I always wonder about other players, if they've ever had injuries. I just want to have a crack at it, really, and this has put me back again," he said.
"It's just one of those things in your mind – am I always going to have these sorts of problems? But at least the main thing is that I haven't had any really bad soft tissue injuries, touch wood.
"I know I'm going to come back again this year. I'm keeping a positive mindset, keep pushing through and hopefully get a real crack at it and show people how I can play."
Veszpremi expected to rejoin the main training group in a fortnight and he has been a regular part of kicking drills and goalkicking sessions in recent weeks.
The enforced layoff has also allowed the former Northern Knights junior to learn more about the game and what he needs to do to join the growing number of young Swans in the senior team.
"I'm more of an observer than a fan now. I don't get into the game as much, but I try to take bits and pieces out of the game and see what I'd do in that situation," he said.
"I have more knowledge of what I've got to do and it's been pretty exciting, because at least I've got a goal while I'm running.
"When I'm running out there by myself, I've realised that okay, if I'm doing this really well, it's going to give me the best opportunity to get that spot in the forward line."
