The Sydney Swans will add another chapter to their rivalry with the Giants, when the two sides meet in the 21st edition of the Sydney Derby at Metricon Stadium tonight.

Whilst preparations were again thrown into chaos as clubs headed to Queensland to keep the AFL season alive, the Swans are determined to maintain their focus on the field.

Co-captain Josh Kennedy admits whilst Sydney are in a good position, each week is a new challenge.

“I think the confidence we’ve been able to gain from playing some of the top teams in the competition has been priceless, but as a club we still have a lot of improvement left to go.

Often what separates those teams from the ones that are in our position at the moment, or just outside the eight, is consistency. That’s something we haven’t been able to really show this year, and needs to change for us going forward.”

Kennedy admits coming up against the Giants will be a huge test, as they look to avenge their two-point loss last time the sides met in Round 5.

“There’s a mutual respect, they’re a good side they play a strong brand of footy – fast and hard. It’s always a close game when we come up against them and this clash will be no exception, and there’s certainly no love lost.”

A win for the Swans would further solidify their spot in the top eight as they set their sights on September football, a position Kennedy says the club has worked extremely hard to be in.

“It’s everyone involved, from the top down. I think in this situation it’s exciting but we’re cautiously optimistic that things can change pretty quickly. You just have to put one foot in front of the other, and certainly not get ahead of ourselves.

The last two years we haven’t played finals and it’s still no guarantee just yet, so we have to continue to trying to improve.”
