Swans’ coach John Longmire was pleased with the performance of his team in last week’s 101-point win over Melbourne, and said he expected the same work rate from his players in Saturday evening’s match.
“We were happy with the way the players bounced back last week, so in the end we haven’t made any changes to last week’s team,” Longmire told sydneyswans.com.au.
“We expect the same sort of effort and commitment again against St Kilda, who over the last few years have been absolute quality, and we’ll have to be at our best to match them.”
Last week’s AFL debutant Tommy Walsh, who was traded to the Swans from St Kilda at the end of 2011, has retained his spot in the team, as well as Mike Pyke, who has again been named in the ruck for the Swans.
“I thought (Pyke and Walsh) did a good job last week,” Longmire said.
“Pykey competed against a top-notch ruckman and Walsh did the same against a top-notch defender, but that was last week and this is this week, so they’ll need to do it again.”
Longmire said his players will need to be wary of St Kilda’s star power, including the Saints’ elite midfield group.
He said the Swans’ midfielders will need to get on top early in the midfield if they are going to contain the Saints’ talented ball-winners.
“(St Kilda’s midfield) are some of the best players going around in the competition, if you talk about what they’ve done over the past few years and what they continue to do this year, he said.
“Lenny Hayes missed last year and now he’s back to his absolute best and is a real star of the competition.
“You look at Goddard, Dal Santo and Montagna and these type of players running through that area, they are really hard to handle at their best, so we’ll have to get our hands on the footy because that’s the best way of stopping them and that’s what we’ll endeavour to do.”
Longmire added that the Swans’ defenders will need to restrict St Kilda’s forward line, including Stephen Milne and young speedsters Ahmed Saad and Terry Milera.
“(St Kilda) have actually added a couple of quality small forwards and some really nippy pace in that part of the ground, so it’s not only Milne,” he said.
“Milne is a star in his own right and is probably one of the best small forwards who has ever played the game as far as goals kicked.
“They’ve added two other small forwards in that part of the ground that are hard to match up on as well, so you combine them with (Nick) Riewoldt and (Justin) Koschitzke when he’s up there and it’s a dangerous forward line.”
