Sydney Swans coach John Longmire has denied Gary Rohan a ‘golden ticket’ into the senior team, with match committee to let things play out before making a decision on the speedster’s return.
Rohan played his first competitive game of the season in Sunday’s NEAFL clash against Brisbane, getting through 80 minutes of football while collecting nine disposals and kicking a goal in the big win at Coorparoo.
Longmire was pleased with the 24-year-old’s performance but stopped short in guaranteeing the defender an immediate recall.
“There are a few good players in our senior team and our reserves are in good form at the moment so it’ll come down to selection,” Longmire said.
“We get down to that in match committee tomorrow. There’s nothing set in stone yet.
“We know he gives us absolute run and hardness, his ability to break through lines through half-back and put pressure on in our front half is of a high standard.
“We’d like to get him back into the team as soon as we can, whether it’s this week or not we just haven’t made that decision yet.”
Rohan’s addition to the back half would be a boost to a unit which, despite question marks going into the season, is averaging only 74.6 points against per game – the third best in the competition behind Geelong and Western Bulldogs.
Longmire said the backline is in a strong position, having got the luxury of three All Australian defenders (Ted Richards, Nick Smith and Jarrad McVeigh), a Heath Grundy in terrific form and a first-year draftee (Callum Mills) who has fitted in seamlessly, among others.
“And I think a lot of people rate Dane Rampe’s ability to play the game,” Longmire added. “We’re really comfortable with how our defenders are going at the moment.”
