Two of the Sydney Swans’ brightest young stars are set to return for Sydney Derby XVII at the SCG on Saturday night.

Defender Lewis Melican and forward Nick Blakey have been recalled to face GWS in the Round 6 clash, with veteran Kieren Jack (hip) and youngster Ben Ronke (omitted) making way.

Melican featured in the first two rounds of the season before returning to the NEAFL for the past three weeks, while first-year Swan Blakey played the first four games before last week running out in the NEAFL.

Sydney coach John Longmire said it was important Melican worked on his game in the NEAFL.

“He’s been really good over the past three weeks. He missed a bit of footy last year so we wanted him to go back to the NEAFL and work on his craft,” Longmire told QBE Team Selection.

“The Giants have a taller forward line than Richmond, so it’s good to see him back in the team.”

Blakey was among the NEAFL side’s best in its win over the Redland Bombers at Blacktown International Sportspark, posting 22 disposals and two goals in the seven-point win.

Longmire said the Swans’ first-round 2018 draft pick impressed in his second-tier appearance.

“He went back and played well in the NEAFL last week,” Longmire said.

“He found a bit of confidence running around in the next level down, he had a number of shots on goal and he ran around really well.”

Jack’s absence due to a hip injury comes just a week after the former Sydney co-captain notched his 250th game against Richmond at Marvel Stadium.

But Longmire says he hopes it’ll only prove a minor setback.

“Unfortunately he had a collision last week and his hip, which has troubled him at various times over the past few years, flared up again,” Longmire said.

“Hopefully it’s only a short-term one. We’ll see how he pulls up next week.”
