A gutsy come-from-behind victory over GWS has given senior coach John Longmire confidence the Swans have what it takes to match it against a tough Geelong outfit this Friday at the SCG.
“It was one of the most high-pressure Round 1 games I’ve seen in a long time,” said Longmire.
“It was fierce from both teams, and both teams had a real crack at it. It was pleasing to have our nose in front at the end because both teams would have come out of that clash with a lot of positives.
"We’re looking forward to bringing the same sort of pressure against the Cats. We know that Geelong had plus-42 contested ball on the weekend, it’s been their trademark for a long time.
"They’re a quality team, they’re a hard team, they win their own footy and you have to be good in that space to match it with the Cats. We’ll have to make sure we’re really strong in the contest."
The Swans haven’t played in front of a home crowd at the SCG in over 9 months, and Longmire believes the voices of the red and white faithful will be crucial to helping his side to a victory on Friday night.
“It’ll be great to get back to the SCG, it’s a great venue and we’re playing against a gun team in Geelong," Longmire said.
"You’ll see some players from both teams that are real generational footballers, so it’s exciting for them to come along.
"Hopefully they get in nice and early because we’re expecting a massive crowd. We’re really excited to play a quality team like the Cats. Back at the SCG, our home ground, it’s great to have our home supporters behind us.”
Lance Franklin remains 4 goals shy of his 1000th goal milestone, but whilst Longmire appreciates the enormity of the achievement it won’t be distracting the teams focus from chasing victory.
“Obviously it will be a great result when he hits the mark, but it’s not something that’s spoken about inside the footy club because it’s talked about enough outside the club."
"We have other focus areas, I take the view that it will happen when it happens. There’s no point focusing on it too much because you can’t control that aspect of the game anyway.”
