When the Sydney Swans faced West Coast in Round 5, the two sides took part in their annual fixture to honour the memory of those who died when HMAS Sydney II was lost in World War II.
Sydney claimed the HMAS Sydney II Commemorative Trophy as it secured a 18.13 (121) to 9.4 (58) victory at Optus Stadium with Callum Mills judged best on ground.
Voted by three commentators, Mills was the unanimous vote to receive the Gun Shell Gallantry Trophy.
Mills was instrumental with a team high 28 disposals along with six clearances, 17 contested possessions, four tackles and eight inside-50s.
November 19, 2021 marked 80 years since 645 young men died when their ship was sunk off the coast of Western Australia in 1941.
In round 5, players from both teams wore black armbands in memory of those who lost their lives in what remains Australia’s greatest naval tragedy.
We are honoured to play for the HMAS Sydney II Commemorative Trophy against West Coast in our annual clash.
