The Swans Reserves have had their first win since round five of the AFL Canberra competition, beating Queanbeyan by 15 points in their round 10 clash at Dairy Farmers Park on Saturday.

The Swans were trailing by four points at the last break but a five goal to two quarter put them in the lead by the final siren.

The Swans ran hard in the first quarter and at the 10 minute mark Patrick Veszpremi, who returned from injury last week, kicked the Swans’ first goal and a few minutes later Luke Ablett had their second. Goals to Mike Pyke and Ryan Brabazon had the Swans in front by 11 points at quarter time.

Just two minutes into the second term, after a dazzling run from halfback from Matthew O’Dwyer who handballed to Ablett, Daniel O’Keefe had the Swans’ first goal for the quarter and kicked his second shortly after. The Swans’ third goal for the quarter came through Taylor Gilchrist after he ran through the middle from halfback. The final two goals for the term came through Veszpremi, from 55 metres, and Nick Smith. After playing their best football for a number of weeks the Swans lead by 22 points at the main break.

Queanbeyan dominated the third term kicking five goals and only allowing the Swans one which came through O’Keefe and was his third for the match.

In the final term the Swans fought back piling on the goals. O’Keefe kicked the Swans first after a clearance from Ablett and had his fifth not long after. Veszpremi kicked the next two for the Swans and by the end of the quarter O’Keefe had six after Ablett went third man up at a stoppage.

O’Dwyer was the Swans best playing at halfback along with Smith and Ablett, both playing on ball. O’Keefe was handy in the forward line kicking six goals and Brabazon, on ball, and ruckman Jake Orreal also made an impact.

The Swans Reserves will now play second-placed Belconnen on Saturday 20 June at Manuka Oval at 2pm.
