The Team SWANS Schools Program was out in force this morning with Swans players visiting schools in the local communities of Daceyville, Surry Hills and Coogee.
Bourke Street Public School in Surry Hills was inundated with Swans players as Marty Mattner, Daniel Currie, Lewis Roberts-Thomson, Ben McGlynn, Matt Spangher and Jesse White held reading sessions for kindergarten and grade one students.
Nick Smith and Lewis Johnston spoke to a class of grade six students at Daceyville Public School about making healthy choices as they begin the transition to high school.
At Coogee Public School, Gary Rohan and Dan Hannebery held a training session for students in the school team who are competing in the finals of the Paul Kelly Cup.
Dan and Gary put the team through their paces with a series of handball and kicking drills, before testing their marking ability with a game where students had to mark a series of long bombs.
The students then had the chance to ask questions of Dan and Gary, with the tough subjects such as last week’s loss to Hawthorn, how tall each player is, and how many girlfriends each has, all put to the boys.
Dan told sydneyswans.com.au that it was great to be out in the local community and be able help to the kids improve their AFL skills.
“It’s great to be out in our community,” Hannebery said.
“I’m here with Gary Rohan, he’s been a massive plus for the kids. The kids love him … and his red hair, and it’s great to see the kids loving AFL.”
