Sydney Swans defender Dane Rampe has described how the team walks taller under the leadership and guidance of Luke Parker.

Saturday’s win against Port Adelaide in the NAB Challenge match at Blacktown was Parker’s second full game of competitive football since breaking his lower leg in round 20 last season.

The fracture spelled an early end to Parker’s season; the prolific ball winner missing the Swans’ entire finals series.

After getting through the club’s intra-club match unscathed on February 12, Parker backed up to collect 32 disposals and seven clearances in a standout performance which helped the Swans claim a 21-point win on Saturday.

Speaking to Melbourne radio this morning, Rampe said Parker’s influence can never be underestimated.

“He’s so good to have out there, you stand that little bit taller when he walks out beside you,” Rampe told Radio Sport National.

“It’s good to see him have a successful return. I think he’s put his injury behind him and he looks set for a big year.”

Tom Mitchell (32 possessions) and Jake Lloyd (31) were also impressive on Saturday, the Swans’ depth on show with Josh Kennedy and Dan Hannebery having quieter afternoons and with co-captains Jarrad McVeigh and Kieren Jack missing.

Rampe said the midfield contingent was tracking well, much like his own form off the back of a solid individual performance against Port Adelaide (23 disposals).

“I’m feeling really good,” Rampe added.

“I’ve been lucky enough to complete every pre-season since I arrived at the club.

“I’m just looking forward to getting back into footy. There’s still plenty I’ve got to work on, so I’ll be looking to implement those into my game as early as possible.”

The Swans have a 13-day break before taking on GWS in the NAB Challenge on March 4 in Drummoyne.
