Three Swans will captain Sydney in our inaugural season in the AFLW, with Maddy Collier, Brooke Lochland and Lauren Szigeti announced as co-captains today.
It comes after the trio were named in the club’s six-person leadership group last week, along with Lisa Steane, Bec Privitelli and Alana Woodward.
New South Wales home-grown talent Maddy Collier brings four seasons of experience in the AFLW competition, having played 34 games with GWS and the West Coast Eagles.
Originally from Nowra on the south coast, Collier said she is incredibly honoured to lead the club she grew up barracking for.
"It's another ‘pinch me’ moment in my Swans journey so far,” Collier said.
"I’m looking forward to helping influence this group in the best way I can, along with the other leaders, to ensure our inaugural year leaves a lasting legacy, that aligns with the wider club values and culture."
Lochland brings previous leadership experience to the role, as a former vice captain of the Western Bulldogs where she played 35 games between 2017-2022.
The 31-year-old said she’s proud to be named as co-captain.
“It’s an absolute honour to lead this club for its first ever season,” Lochland said.
"We are building something special and I’m excited to continue to shape our culture alongside the rest of the leadership group and the wider playing group."
Szigeti, who joined Sydney from the Hawthorn VFL side, is the youngest of the trio at just 22-years of age.
She said the immense honour of being named co-captain is still sinking in.
"I don’t think I can fully get my head around just how special it is to be one of the first female captains of this club," Szigeti said.
"It’s one of those things that’s bigger than me as an individual – it’s history making. I’m so honoured to have the opportunity to hold this role and it means the world to me that I have the trust from my teammates, staff and the club as a whole to play a special part in leading this team in our inaugural season."
The Sydney Swans historic Round 1 match is this Saturday, August 27 against St Kilda at North Sydney Oval at 5:10pm.
