Swans reserves coach Henry Playfair is keen for his players to continue their good form and put pressure on the players currently in the senior team.

The reserves have won their past two games by a combined total of 213 points, and  Playfair has been pleased by the boost from the influx of players returning from injury following the NEAFL round 18 bye.

Over the last two weeks, the reserves have been strengthened by the addition of Campbell Heath, Gary Rohan, Jed Lamb, Matt Spangher, Brett Meredith, Lewis Johnston and Mike Pyke from injury, and Nick Malceski and Trent Dennis-Lane who were omitted from from the seniors.

“We did suffer a few injuries at the Club during that period (prior to the bye), which always makes it a bit difficult,” Playfair told sydneyswans.com.au.

“We’ve got a few players starting to come back now and starting to get in some good form.

“With only a handful of games to go, it’s important that we don’t taper off individually or as a team, that blokes still keep putting their hand up and putting pressure on the guys in the seniors.”

One of the many players who impressed in Sunday’s 113-point win over Queanbeyan at Canberra’s Dairy Farmers Park was Nathan Gordon, who finished with 16 marks and six goals upon his return to the team following his duties as the travelling emergency for the seniors the week before.

“He was sensational,” Playfair said. “His marking was the really pleasing aspect of his game on the weekend.

“He’s had strong hands throughout his career but the weekend was a highlight, to take 16 marks in a game - probably half of those were contested, and half again were probably inside the forward 50.”

Playfair expressed his delight with the injection of energy the team  received from impressive young pair, Rohan and Lamb.

“They’re young, exciting players that we haven’t seen a lot of,, but from what we have seen they bring a fair bit of excitement to our team and some genuine speed and a bit of class on the outside,” he said.

They both built up their playing time to 80 minutes in their second game back, with Rohan playing a running role off half-back and Lamb featuring on the attacking side of the midfield.

“(Gary) got a few good link-up balls and used his pace to run and carry and get some quality entry into our forwards,” Playfair said.

“Jed was really classy in and around the ball. He played in the midfield and on the ball and won plenty of the footy around the ground and used it pretty well, rarely wasting a possession.”

Playfair said he has been impressed with the level of professionalism shown by Jarred Moore who put in another strong performance against Queanbeyan on the weekend.

“Jarred has been fantastic with his leadership and the way he has carried himself this year,” he said.

“He has played really consistent footy in the reserves. Ideally he is a senior player, but he has come back and hasn’t dropped off at all.”

The Swans reserves return to Sydney this weekend as they take on the Brisbane Lions reserves at Blacktown Olympic Park from 1pm on Saturday.

Despite the Lions being bottom of the Northern Conference, Playfair is wary of the attacking threat they possess, having seen them kick seven consecutive last quarter goals in their previous encounter back at the beginning of June.

“We had a crunch game with them during the season and just got over the line by seven points,” he said.

“We’ve got some players building into form, so we’ll be looking for a really quality performance against some pretty good opposition on the weekend.”
