The Swans came away from the top of the table clash against Belconnen with the four points after a 58-point win at the SCG on Sunday in wet and slippery conditions.

The Swans were trailing by 12 points at the end of the first quarter after Belconnen kicked five goals to the Swans’ three.

Luke Vogels opened the quarter with his first major but Belconnen immediately answered with two of their own. Twelve minutes into the quarter Simon Phillips kicked two goals in five minutes to put the Swans eight points in front but the Magpies piled on three more goals before the first break.

The Swans upped the ante in the second quarter, outscoring Belconnen seven goals to four. Two goals to Luke Brennan and one each to Kieren Jack, Amon Buchanan and Jonathan Simpkin had the Swans ten points in front by the 23 minute mark.

Belconnen managed two more before Matthew Beckmans, a top-up player for the Swans, finished the quarter with a mark and goal to put the Swans in front by three points at half time.

After an eleven goal second term, the goal rate dropped off in the third quarter with the teams managing only five goals each. Vogels once again opened the quarter with a goal only three minutes in, before the Swans allowed Belconnen their first goal for the quarter. Phillips kicked his third for the game after a mark 45 metres out before Belconnen hit back with their second goal of the quarter thereafter.

Brennan scored the final goal of the quarter, which was also his third, and at three quarter time the Swans had extended their lead to 13 points.

In the final quarter the Swans showed their true colours, not allowing Belconnen to score even a point, while kicking away to the 58 point margin. Beckmans kicked the first goal for the quarter from a mark followed by a 50 metre penalty and Brennan kicked the second shortly after from a mark 35 metres out. Jack then goaled on the run, and Ryan Brabazon and Matthew Davis followed suit. Buchanan ended the game with two more goals, one after a free kick and the other from a mark and 50 metre penalty.

Heath Grundy was the Swans’ best at centre half back while Vogels also made an impact playing at centre half forward and full forward. Jack enjoyed his third week as one of the best players, showing his consistency on ball and in the half back line. Jarred Moore, playing on ball, and Ed Barlow at centre half forward also impressed. Buchanan, missing a run in the seniors for the first time since round six, showed positive signs of regaining form after kicking three goals playing on ball.

Next week will be another top of the table clash, after Eastlake took second position from Belconnen. The game will be played on Sunday July 15 at 9.50am at the SCG as the curtain raiser to the Swans and Carlton game at 1.10pm.
