Swans ruckman Shane Mumford has avoided any structural damage after injuring his left knee in Sunday afternoon’s clash with St Kilda.

The ruckman hyperextended his knee during a ruck contest, but scans showed he was clear of any ligament or cartilage damage.

Sydney Swans physiotherapist Matt Cameron told SwansTV that Mumford suffered some bone bruising from the incident.

“When you hyperextend your knee you can actually do some damage to the ligaments or even the cartilage inside,” Cameron said.

“Mumford’s scans on Monday showed that he hasn’t damaged any of those structures, and that’s a good thing because you often require surgery (if you do).

“He has a little bit of bone bruising and whilst the pain he had in his knee was quite bad on the day, things are starting to improve.”

Cameron said it was unlikely Mumford would take the field against Gold Coast this week.

“It is unpredictable and day-by-day, as his symptoms settle we’ll get an idea of when we’re getting close,” he said.

“The pain levels should gradually decrease and when they’re low enough he’ll be able to start running and be able to start training.

“We can’t see him playing this week, we’re just going to have to see how he settles for the next coming weeks, but we’re not anticipating a really long layoff.”

Fellow ruckman Mark Seaby is also expected to spend another week on the sidelines following an ongoing calf complaint.

Cameron said Seaby should be fit to return next weekend.

“He strained a calf two weeks ago and whilst we thought he’d be able to play last week, he just hasn’t quite improved enough to start running,” he said.

“He is up and running now but he’s not quite ready to join the training track.

“He’ll be touch and go and he’ll be unlikely to play this week but hopefully will play next week.”

In other injury news, Swans first-year player Tom Mitchell faces another stint on the sidelines after injuring his foot in the dying minutes of the Swans reserves 130-point win over Belconnen on Sunday.

Cameron said despite initial concerns, scans have cleared Mitchell’s foot of any fractures.

“(Mitchell) hurt his foot right towards the end of the game in a tackle, so it was sort of a twisting injury to his foot,” he said.

“He was in quite a bit of pain immediately after the game, but he’s had an X-ray and he’s been cleared of any fractured bone in his foot.

“He’s having some more tests today to determine exactly what structures have been injured.

“He is starting to walk around on it now and he is improving, but we’ll have some more info after those tests.”
