The Sydney Swans have confirmed a bulk of their VFL squad for the 2023 campaign with some familiar names and new faces forming part of a skillful playing group that will play under new coach, Damian Truslove.
The Swans finished fourth at the end of the 2022 season although were made to rue a tough finals campaign with back-to-back losses to Casey Demons and Gold Coast Suns respectively.
However, they take plenty of confidence into the new year with the likes of Harry Morrison, Jake Bartholomaeus, and Nic Shipley remaining in the red and white for another season.
"It's been really exciting to come into the new facility where everyone has plenty of energy, and the VFL players are training hard and have come back from the Christmas break in really good condition," Trsulove said.
"It's a really exciting group and a young group. They are really fit and enthusiastic, and I think there will be some really exciting footy being played this year," he said.
"We're in a real education phase at the moment, and we also really want them to be as fit and strong as possible.
Meanwhile, Truslove also confirmed Shipley, Bartholomaeus, Morrison, Jake Veale and Will Collis will form the leadership group for 2023. He lauded their dedication on and off the field as a major factor to their appointments
"We have a fantastic leadership group. The five that we have train hard, they are good people, and help drive high standards and our values which is really, really important," he said.
"They also have a good connection with the AFL list, so when they come together with those players, they already have a strong relationship."
The VFL squad will continue to train sparingly with the senior playing group throughout the 2023 pre-season - affording the players the chance to craft their trade with those who are AFL listed. It ensures players on both lists are able to play alongside each other seamlessly on Game Day.
"It's really important for our players to train with them when possible, because the VFL boys get a lot of confidence training with the elite AFL player" he said.
"It also advances them in the club's game plan and strategy, and then when they come together on game day, they already have that relationship and connection."
