Sydney Swans assistant coach Dean Cox is looking forward to another season with the red and white. Speaking in a Premiership Club exclusive this month, he highlighted the young players to watch in 2023.

The first to come to mind was Logan McDonald, an explosive key forward who impressed in the pre-season practice match against Carlton.

Entering his third season, McDonald added 15 goals to his name from 17 games and earned a Rising Star nomination in Round 12 throughout his 2022 campaign.

Cox also highlighted the talents of the developing young Swans squad including Matty Roberts, Angus Sheldrick and Will Edwards.

Sheldrick was selected for the young Swans side with pick 18 in the 2021 AFL draft. He impressed with a strong pre-season in early 2022 securing his debut in Round 1 and appearing again in Round 2.

However, the Australian Football Hall of Famer has special praise for 19-year-old Matty Roberts who performed well throughout his second tough pre-season.

“Matty Roberts got an opportunity for the majority of the Carlton game and plated really well inside and on the wing – he was really composed,” Cox said.

“Hopefully we can see him in a Swans jumper a few times this season.”

Roberts was selected with pick 34 of the 2021 AFL draft and made his debut in 2022 during Round 11 against Richmond.
