Today is World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD), 21 March, a global awareness day that has been officially observed by the United Nations since 2012.

The date for WDSD is the 21st day of the 3rd month. This date was selected to signify the uniqueness of the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome which causes Down syndrome.

In support of our partners, Down Syndrome NSW, the Sydney Swans players, coaches and staff have thrown their support behind the ‘Lots of Socks’ initiative, throwing on their best pair of whacky socks, while families and members from Down Sydney NSW attended training and had a kick on the field with the players.

The aim of the ‘Lots of Socks’ campaign is to raise awareness of Down syndrome among the community, as well as raise funds for your local State or Territory Down syndrome association. The idea behind the ‘Lots of Socks’ initiative is acceptance of all our differences, and what makes us unique as an individual.

The Swans and Down Syndrome NSW joined forces in 2021 as part of the Swans’ Diversity Action Plan. The Sydney Swans first launched a Diversity Action Plan in 2017 to formalise commitments in four key pillars:

  • Disability empowerment
  • LGBTIQ+ pride
  • Multicultural inclusion
  • Advancement of women
