Sydney impressed over Hawthorn by 81 points for a second straight win to start the season on Sunday, recording a 17.16 (118) to 4.13 (37) victory at the SCG.
Speaking after the game, Senior Coach John Longmire was pleased with his side, pinpointing the evenness of the performance and the discipline shown by his young brigade as the key takeaways from the clash.
Despite the dominant performance, the first quarter saw some early Hawks pressure, but Longmire praised his young side who were able to absorb and retaliate with their own.
“The most pleasing was the evenness of the performance and really following up from last week and our discipline to what we wanted to get done,” Longmire said.
“I thought it was a balanced game. We knew Hawthorn would be coming out with some real fire, which they did, particularly in that first quarter. We thought their pressure was really high and we knew they would come out really hard.
“We were able to withstand that, absorb it a bit and give more back.
“For our younger boys to be able to do that and have that experience is terrific.”
Young key forwards Logan McDonald (five goals) and Joel Amartey (four) combined for nine goals in Lance Franklin's absence, with the two forwards dominant throughout as Sydney controlled the contest from the outset to make it two wins from two.
The young duo caused the Hawks all sorts of problems and Longmire was impressed by their performances.
“Logan probably could have had 4-5 last week if it wasn’t for the slippery conditions, but he moves well, we know he is a good player, works on his craft really well and is humble,” Longmire said.
“He’s a beauty and got rewarded on the scoreboard which is great to see.
“Joel, we planned on playing him just the three quarters if everything went well, but he provided a real target for us,” he added.
“He is developing his craft. He missed a bit of the pre-season and wasn’t able to work on some of his craft that he would have liked to do, but he has got back in pretty good nick and his hands in those marking situations were strong.
“He provided a real forward presence for us and he was able to provide that real focal point of us up front which was terrific.”
Longmire went on to praise another Swans youngster in Errol Gulden, who finished with 28 disposals.
The 20-year old lead the way in pressure acts and Longmire put it down to the midfielder’s dedication and effort, rather than luck.
“He has that good mix of knowing football for a young player and really knows the game – and has done since he has come into the senior team,” Longmire said.
“From day one, he knows and sees the game well for a young player, and he has that combination of hard defensive effort but can then go and run hard forward.
“You see how Errol goes about it, he just works so hard. He does what you know good players do and it’s no luck with him. He works hard at what he does and that gives himself the best possible chance.”
