Jet’s Journal – ups and downs of footy
Jets tells us he had some high moments – literally – and some real lows against Essendon last week
Footy has plenty of ups and downs, and I got to experience them all in the one match against Essendon last Saturday night.
The night started pretty good when I kicked the ball so high I thought it was going to hit the roof or one of the lights in the stadium, but then it went through for a goal.
We just did that Coke Zero Challenge, but this was like it was for real.
I was on the outside of a pack and I had some protection and the ball dribbled out to me and Birdy blocked for me and I kicked it. I had my hands on my hips, waiting for it to come down, it went so high, it almost hit the roof, and then it landed a metre over the goal line.

But I don’t know what happened with my big run later in the first quarter when I got it from Goodesy, ran down the centre and missed the shot for goal. I meant to aim for the goals but it didn’t swing in and I sprayed that one.
Things can go right and wrong all in one quarter.
Looking back at a game like that - where I kicked two goals but missed an easy one, and then missed hitting Mal with a handball in the last quarter - can be tough.
You look on the positive side, but also don’t forget the negatives, and you think of improvement. That’s what I do.
As soon as that handball left my hand, I put my head down, and then ran towards the defensive area, but Essendon had already gone with it. I think I had got too excited and now I look back and think I should have just kicked it forward.
So I was walking around with my head down, thinking, “I’ve lost the game here’’, but Goodesy came to me and said “Keep your head up, we’re still in the game’’.
Goodesy missed a couple of easy goals too, and I have to say I know the feeling!
What is done is done, and you can’t change it, so you just have to put it behind you and think of this coming week against Richmond.
That’s footy. We have to stick together and at training we have to work on what we did wrong and bring it into the game this week. Make sure we have a four quarter effort, and don’t spray the kicks or handballs!
