Kieren Jack said the Sydney Swans’ relentless pressure in the opening term against Essendon was the catalyst for another big victory at Etihad Stadium on Friday night.

With an intensity similar to what they produced against Hawthorn last week, the Swans burst out of the blocks and piled on seven goals to one in the opening term, which set up the Swans for a 50-point win, and their fifth win on the trot.

Speaking to SwansTV after the win, the co-captain said there was no doubt his side stepped up to the challenge again this week.

“It was a big victory,” Jack said.

“We wanted to come out of the blocks and set the scene early and I think we did that and I think we’ve probably done that over the past four to five weeks.

“I thought our boys’ pressure all over the ground, with the forwards chasing and the mids covering the outlets, we really kept the ball in our half early and they couldn’t get the ball out of there.

“That’s pleasing and that’s probably the benchmark for us now and it’s the cornerstone of our game, as it probably is for every team.

“But we know if we get it right, we’re pretty hard to beat.”

Jack, who boasts the impressive statistic of improving his disposal count with every match this season, was again a stand out for the Swans, finishing the match with 32 touches, seven clearances and three tackles. Fellow mid and club leader Josh Kennedy was also dominant, with a game-high 39 touches, ten clearances and one goal.

While the senior midfielders played their role extremely well throughout the match, the Swans’ younger group also contributed to Friday night’s win.

Craig Bird (31 touches, seven tackles), Dan Hannebery (28 touches, seven inside-50s) and Luke Parker (26 touches, eight tackles, three goals) were also important for the Swans, which impressed the co-captain.

“I thought it was a really even effort,” Jack said.

“The pleasing thing is that we’re not relying on one or two and we’ve got a really good mix in there and some real depth now.

“Every now and again Luke Parker will go to another level and Jakey Lloyd is running through there and ‘Jetts’ (Lewis Jetta) is playing really good football too.

“Harry Cunningham had a run on (Brent) Stanton as well, so he’ll learn a lot from that.

“I thought it was a really even effort and that’s what we need.”

Heading into next week’s bye, the Swans will now enjoy a four-day break before returning to the club on Wednesday to prepare for their round 11 clash with Geelong at the SCG.

Jack said the break would allow his team to recharge and reset ahead of next Thursday night’s huge Indigenous Round clash against the Cats.

“Credit to the boys and we head into the bye with some momentum, which is pleasing but at the same time we’re not going to get too carried away with it,” he said.

“We’re fully aware that we’ve got Geelong on a Thursday night coming up, so we’ll enjoy the win and have a couple of days off but then get back to business.

“We’ll get in on Wednesday, get back to the club eight days before Geelong and we’ll just start preparing for that.

“Touch wood I don’t think there’s any injuries, so that’s the pleasing aspect and we can rest up and really look forward to that game on the Thursday night into Indigenous Round and she’ll be on then.”
