Paddy McCartin retires
On Monday August 14, Paddy McCartin announced his retirement from AFL football.
The 27-year-old has played 63 AFL games in total, 28 of which were for the Sydney Swans, including last year’s Grand Final.
McCartin made the decision after an independent AFL medical concussion panel recommended that he cease participation in contact sport.
McCartin addressed teammates on Monday, informing them of his decision.
“I want to thank the Sydney Swans for the faith shown in me and the opportunity to pursue my dream of playing AFL football. It has been a privilege to play for this great club and I will remember this time fondly.”

John Longmire: “It will be a real challenge on their home deck.”
Speaking in a press conference on Tuesday, senior coach John Longmire discussed Sydney’s Round 23 opposition, praising their form this season.
“They're a pressure team, they’ve got some experience through the middle of the ground, they’ve been able to handle some injuries down back and they’ve got a forward line that’s as good as any converting inside 50s,” Longmire told journalists.
“Their form stands up so it will be real challenge on their home deck.”
Nick Blakey set to play his 100th game
23-year-old Nick Blakey is set to play his 100th career game against the Adelaide Crows this weekend. The QBE Sydney Swans Academy product made his debut for the senior side in Round 1 of the 2019 season and has since become a crucial component in the Swans back line.
Famously nicknamed the Lizard, Longmire touched on his milestone this week.
“On and off the field he has great spirit, he’s a real character, loves being around the boys and an important young member of the group,” Longmire said in a press conference.
“What he’s been able to do on the ground is important as well.”
