In the lead up to Pride Game at the SCG between the Sydney Swans and St Kilda on Saturday night we learn more about the passion of some of the members of the Rainbow Swans.
Throughout the week on sydneyswans.com.au we will bring you profile pieces on some of the members that make up the club’s official LGBTIQ supporter group.
First up we learn more about Dion Alexander who has been supporting the Swans since 2012.
When did you start supporting the Swans?
I first started supporting the Swans in 2012 when I moved to Sydney from Adelaide.
Why did you begin supporting the Swans?
The Swans hard brand of football and never say never attitude was infectious and regardless of the score they always presented like they could win the game.
What has been your favourite memory of supporting the Swans?
My favourite Swans memory is the win against Essendon this year when it looked like our finals chances were over and the never say die attitude of the Bloods came through for the best win I have ever seen live.
Who are your favourite players and why?
Luke Parker, Dan Hannebery, Kieran Jack and Buddy for their ferociousness and competitive spirit.
What is it you most love about supporting the Swans?
The Swans play to win all the time and have built a great supporter group that is inclusive and welcoming. If we win, lose or draw supporters are always respectful on the journey home from a match
What does Pride Game mean to you?
Pride Game is an opportunity for me to enjoy a sport I have loved watching for the greater part of my life while promoting equality and inclusivity. It is the biggest game of the season for me because it is the culmination of a sport I love with the promotion of life and social values I hold so close to my heart.
What does being a member of the Rainbow Swans mean to you?
Being a member of the Rainbow Swans means the world to me. Each week I get to be involved in a group of respectful people that love the Swans and have the same values as me.
