Have you ever wondered what goes into building a professional football club from the ground up?

Well a bevy of young Swans put their minds to that very task recently as part of their off-field studies with education and employment facilitator AFL SportsReady.

Jeremy Laidler, Jake Lloyd, George Hewett, Sam Naismith, Harry Marsh and Nic Newman all earned their Diplomas of Sports Leadership and Management on Wednesday following presentations delivered at AFL NSW's Moore Park headquarters.

The project was just the final component in the 12-month course, which is just one of many under the AFL SportsReady program aiming to provide players with qualifications, experience and industry networks to develop a full-time career within the sports industry post-football.

Split into two groups, the players were required to outline the intricate steps involved in the formation of a professional sporting organisation.

Not surprisingly, both parties stuck to what they knew best and the by-product was the (hypothetical) creation of the Tasmania and Darwin football clubs.

Everything from the recruitment of the senior coach, to the human resources side of the organisation, to appropriate policies addressing community and diversity was ‘implemented’.

Newman, who partnered with Laidler and Lloyd to get Tasmania Football Club off the ground, said the process was a great learning curve.

"The most interesting part was thinking about all the different areas of a football club," Newman said.

"The success of a football club extends further than just what the players achieve on-field.

"There's so much more that goes into it like the staff behind the scenes and their welfare, how the club engages with the community and how the club addresses different issues like diversity and inclusiveness.”

Newman isn't sure of what life after football holds but understands the importance of thinking about it now.

"Everyone’s playing days come to an end, whether that be early or after a long career, so by thinking and preparing for it now it softens the blow when that time eventually comes.

"It’s a great escape from the rigours of being a player as well.”

The group presented in front of AFL NSW staff as well as teammates Toby Nankervis, Lewis Melican, Abe Davis, Jordan Foote and Jack Hiscox who are all halfway through completing their Certificate IV in Sports Leadership and Management.
