A band of bearded brothers
Rhyce Shaw and Nick Malceski's beards met their match on Thursday in Dodgers pitcher, Brian Wilson
Los Angeles Dodgers closer Brian Wilson, who is in town for the historic Major League Baseball Opening Series in Sydney, has a beard so impressive that it even has its own unofficial Twitter and Facebook accounts, which are followed by nearly 50,000 users combined - the man himself is followed by 635,000 on Twitter.
Malceski and Shaw caught up with the charismatic American in the Dodgers’ dugout on Thursday and learnt a few things about Wilson, including the story behind his famous look.
“The beard has been going on for three years now and that just came about because I just didn’t’ want to shave,” Wilson told the Swans’ pair.
“But the hair on the other hand, I woke up and it was just dreaded one day.
“I manifested that and I always wanted to try dreads and I woke up and literally because it’s so grimy and so nasty, it just matted itself overnight.”
The bearded trio chatted about all things Australian, including Wilson’s recent trip to Bondi and his thoughts about this weekend’s Opening Series against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Wilson, who closed out the World Series while playing for the San Francisco Giants in 2010, was also highly complementary of Malceski and Shaw’s beards, but was a little confused about the many different football codes in Australia.
“I’d say you guys did a phenomenal job (on the beards),” he said.
“And you guys play rugby so I don’t want to say anything out of line!”
