The SCG will come alive on Thursday, March 7 as we take on Melbourne on the Opening Night of the AFL’s Opening Round.

The match promises to be a spectacle that blends history and rivalry – Melbourne was the first club South Melbourne played in its first season in the VFA in 1879.
CEO Tom Harley said it’s a match you won’t want to miss.
“Season 2024 is a special one in the history of our football club and what better way to kick it off than under lights at the SCG against our oldest rivals,” Harley said.
“After some huge crowds at the SCG this year we’re absolutely thrilled to be opening the season – this is going to be another one of those unmissable games that we will be talking about for the years ahead.
“We’re putting the finishing touches on our calendar of events to celebrate 150 years, commencing with this match as the centrepiece in Sydney, so mark it in your calendar now and make sure you’ve renewed your membership as it’s the best way to secure access.”
The Sydney Swans Opening Night is one of four matches across New South Wales and Queensland that will launch the 2024 Toyota Premiership Season.
The eight teams that play in the AFL’s Opening Round will then have a bye between Rounds 2 and 6, with all 18 teams in the competition having played the same number of games by the beginning of Round 7.
