Sydney’s most iconic venue provided the perfect backdrop for the Sydney Swans to officially kick off the club’s 150th year with the 2024 AFL Guernsey Presentation, presented by Volkswagen.

The event comes ahead of Sydney’s Opening Night match against Melbourne at the SCG on Thursday, March 7, which will mark a special celebration of 150 years.

It was a proud night for Bloods Champion Brett Kirk who was on hand to watch his son Indhi receive his first Swans jumper. He was one of 10 players to receive the famous red and white guernsey for the first time, including new recruits Taylor Adams and Brodie Grundy, along with draftees Will Green and Caiden Cleary.

AFLW co-captain Chloe Molloy delivered the toast to the men’s team, while CEO Tom Harley said there is much for members to be excited about in the season ahead.

“This year marks a special milestone for our football club as we celebrate our journey from South Melbourne in 1874 to where we are today, with more than 65-thousand members, sell-out crowds, and the privilege of calling two iconic Sydney venues our home,” Harley said.

“The Opera House was the place the team gathered to announce Sydney as our new home back in 1982, so it’s fitting that we’re here to mark this occasion ahead of another significant year.

“It’s just 16 days until we open the AFL season against Melbourne, and we can’t wait to celebrate with our passionate members at the SCG.”

Callum Mills, who was recently announced as sole captain of the Sydney Swans, said it is always a special night for the new players receiving their first guernsey.

“I still vividly remember being presented with my first Swans jumper and it remains one of the highlights of my career,” Mills said.

“For our new players it will be a special night, so I wish them all the best and hope they have long and successful careers in the red and white. We all can’t wait for the season to get underway.”
