At the coin toss for our match against Brisbane Lions on Sunday, we will exchange cultural gifts as part of Indigenous Round celebrations. Co-captain Lucy McEvoy will gift a contemporary wall hanging.
The gift, titled – ‘Strength in Community’, created through the traditional skills of weaving, was designed by artist Ashlie Rogers from Marrga Ngoongie. Ashlie is an accomplished weaver, artist and a mentor with the GO foundation, and is passionate about the advancement of First Nations youth via education through culture.
The design depicts three larger circles in the middle, representing the Brisbane Lions Club (in the middle) and the players and their families (on left) and the supporters of the Lions community (on the right).
The three smaller circles on the bottom represent the three First Nations players playing AFLW for the Lions, rapped in emu feathers representing traditional ceremony dress, while the three circles at the top represent the three First Nations players in the Lions AFL squad.
The use of the Lions colours – maroon, blue and yellow, was used to connect the circles together and represents the strength of connection through the sport of AFL.
The Sydney Swans extend our gratitude to Ashlie for her work to craft our cultural gift for Round 9.
