VFL Head Coach Jarrad McVeigh says there was no shortage of effort from his young side after its Round 1 loss to Collingwood on Saturday.
The Swans fell to the Magpies by 25-points at Victoria Park and speaking to Sydney Swans Media on Monday, McVeigh said the side did plenty right for most of the game, but its forward entries let it down.
"It was pretty disappointing to lose the game, we had a lot of opportunities and I think all our indicators would suggest we played really well but it was probably just our final entries into our forward line and in the forward third of the ground that really hurt us on the day," McVeigh said.
"Our stoppage work was really strong, our pressure and our ability to get inside 50s and keep the ball in our forward half was really strong.
"But we just couldn't convert on the day, either our goal kicking or just our pure entries to our forwards which were probably too shallow on the day."
Despite the loss, McVeigh said there were encouraging signs from the side which fielded seven AFL-listed players with Caiden Cleary topping the disposals with 37 and Aaron Francis and Ben Paton also amongst the Swans best.
"We wanted to defend really well and Aaron and Ben, who came back from senior footy, were really strong for us," McVeigh said.
"We'll continue to work on our skill work and our connection with our forwards throughout midfield and defenders.
"There was a couple of good efforts, Tommy Longmire has been pretty strong down forward as well."
Captain Nick Shipley impressed in his 50th VFL game, the midfielder starring with 35 disposals, nine clearances, and a game-high eight tackles.
"Nick was probably our best performing player, he really led the way with his transition running," McVeigh said.
"His hardness over the ball was really strong to see, it was a very fast VFL game, it was really strong and it's not easy getting used to the speed of the game."
The Swans will break for a bye this weekend, before setting their sights on their Round 3 match against North Melbourne on Sunday, April 6 at Arden Street Oval.
