The Sydney Swans and the Australian Graduate School of Management at the University of NSW teamed up for the first time last year to create the Leading for High Performance short course, delivered at Sydney Swans HQ.

The unique education opportunity draws on each organisation’s expertise in building leadership capabilities and shaping culture.

The first intakes of the two-day course were held last year and received terrific feedback from the program’s participants who said it was “very powerful”, “made me think differently”, and “provided practical tools and insights to imbed at work”.

The course explores culture as the foundation of success, and creating an environment where people are encouraged and supported to do their best work. Topics covered include:

  • Aligning teams around a shared vision: Ensure that everyone is working toward the same strategic goals and bridge any gaps between leadership and staff.
  • Building accountability and trust: Learn how to establish a culture of responsibility, where individuals take ownership of their work and teams work together seamlessly.
  • Sustaining long-term high performance: Develop strategies that allow your organisation to maintain its peak performance in the long run, even when faced with challenges.

Facilitated by AGSM Fellow & Adjunct Associate Professor Denise Weinreis and Sydney Swans Chief Operating Officer Drew Arthurson, the course will arm participants with a toolkit to enhance their people management skills and shape a culture of high performance within their business or team.

Denise specialises in coaching executives and teams to empower and motivate others through energy and leadership, while Drew uses the fundamentals of the Sydney Swans high-performance philosophy and practices to teach leaders how to maximise team performance.

“Every activity in the Leading for High Performance program will be ‘real play’,” Denise said. “It’s a lived experience that will help participants explore performance at three levels: within themselves, their teams, and their organisation.”

Meanwhile Drew said the program is designed for high performing people and teams from all walks of life, and participants don’t need to be into sport to benefit from it.

“What excites me most about this program is the impact we can have on individual people, with tangible ideas that can help galvanise their performance and get them ready to do their life’s best work,” he said.
