Girls from all teams across the Sydney Harbour region kicked off their footy season in style with a training session hosted by Swans stars Josh Kennedy and Ted Richards on Tuesday.
As part of the club’s Australia Post AFL Community Camp, the Swans duo led over 50 girls in some kicking and handballing drills before giving them a tour of the club’s SCG training facilities.
Rising star, 17-year-old Zoe Devlin, said she learned a lot from the session.
“It’s been a really fun day and a great insight into how the Swans train,” Devlin said.
“I learned some great training techniques and also how the Swans prepare and recover properly after training and games.
“It was great to have a look around their facilities as well and hopefully once I finish school I can finish with the Women’s Academy and play in the National Women’s League one day.”
Youth Girls is the fastest growing segment for the AFL and there are now over 284,501 females playing the game across Australia.
Late last year, AFL NSW/ACT established the first ever Female AFL Academy, coached by former Swan Tim Schmidt, which will give players an opportunity to hone their skills ahead of the national female competition in 2017.
AFL NSW/ACT participation manager Tim Fava said the number of females playing AFL is rising every year.
"It was a great to see the Sydney Harbour youth girls get together with the Swans to celebrate the start of the new season,” Fava said.
"It's fantastic that so many girls are now playing the game and sharing their love of the sport with their friends.
"With the creation of the Female AFL Academy there's now a defined pathway for females from Auskick all the way through to senior footy and potentially making their way into the national female competition."
