A season-high home crowd of 36,640 supporters swarmed to the SCG to witness a Sunday afternoon packed with fascinating storylines – and Sydney Swans youngster Jordan Dawson has called for the fans to keep rolling in.

Not only did the sea of red and white cheer on the Swans as they surged to a 45-point victory over the reigning premier, co-captain Dane Rampe celebrated his 150^th AFL match and favourite son Heath Grundy farewelled the footy world in the West Coast Eagles clash. 

Star forward Lance Franklin also produced a season-best performance on his way to five goals, young Swan Tom Papley claimed the best-on-ground honour to continue his stunning run of form, and the match honoured the 645 men who died on the HMAS Sydney II ship in World War II.

In a fun fact for the trivia buffs, the Swans’ victory also extended their winning SCG run against the Eagles to eight games – a hoodoo stretching back to 1999. 

Dawson said he’d love to see an SCG full of red and white over the remaining rounds of the season.

“It was awesome to have so many fans come out and cheer us on tonight,” Dawson told SwansTV post-match.

“It was good to see the SCG was so full. Hopefully after that win the fans can continue to come out. Hopefully at our next home game the crowd is just as big, which would be absolutely awesome.”

Dawson had played just five senior matches over his first three seasons at the Swans, but he’s racked up 10 of a possible 12 games in his 2019 campaign.

The 2015 draftee is this year averaging 18 disposals per match and has booted eight goals, and he posted 20 touches in Sunday’s match against the Eagles. 

Sydney is now scheduled for a bye before squaring off with Hawthorn at the SCG in its next outing, and Dawson says he’s determined to build on his strong form over the back end of the season.

“I’m pretty happy to have got to the bye playing regular senior footy, and now it’s about taking my game to a new level and being more consistent,” Dawson said.

“I think I’ve shown some good signs, but I know I’ve got more to offer. It’ll be good after the bye to get back into it.”
