Firebrand Sydney Swans forward Tom Papley couldn’t be swayed into classing season 2019 as the best of his career so far, but the man they call ‘Poppy’ says he’s relishing his hot run of form.

The former rookie-listed Swan added another glittering performance to his thriving 2019 campaign on Sunday afternoon, storming to 27 disposals and five goals in a best-on-ground display as Sydney toppled the West Coast Eagles by 45 points at the SCG.

Papley has now booted 21 goals this season and is averaging 1.8 majors and 16.7 disposals per match.

The 22-year-old says he’s delighted with the form he’s produced over the opening 12 rounds of the season.

“I’m taking it one step at a time. I don’t want to get too far ahead of myself, but I’ve had a good first half of the year,” Papley told SwansTV. 

“I had my first pre-season this year, I’m feeling fit and I’m loving it down forward.

“We’re really working as a group and the young forward line is exciting.”

Star teammate Lance Franklin also treated the 36,640-strong crowd to an afternoon packed with supreme entertainment.

The four-time Coleman medallist, who’s now just two games away from his 300^th AFL appearance, booted a season-best five-goal haul.

Franklin spearheaded a new-look Sydney forward line in the Eagles clash, with James Rose filling in for the injured Will Hayward and Daniel Menzel playing just his second senior match in red and white.

Papley considers it an enormous privilege to have Franklin as a teammate.

“It’s an honour to play with him,” Papley said.

“It’s pretty special when he’s kicking goals from the boundary like that one after the final siren tonight.

“He’s a selfless player, he loves the boys, he loves the kids playing for us and he helps us out.”
