Sydney forward Lance Franklin bagged 12 goals across the opening two rounds to grab a commanding lead early in the race for the Coleman Medal.

But fellow forward Tom Papley said the Swans were rapt with the wide spread of contributors in their 16-point win over the Giants at the SCG on Saturday night.

Franklin bagged eight goals against West Coast in Round 1 and four against Port Adelaide in Round 2 to draw level in ninth with Collingwood and Carlton great Peter McKenna on the all-time VFL/AFL goal-kicking chart.

But the 874-goal champion didn’t hit the scoreboard until the fourth term on Saturday and the Swans had a spread of nine goal-kickers.

Five players kicked a pair of goals each and ruckman Callum Sinclair produced a stellar performance in booting three.

Papley said the even spread in front of goal was key to the Sydney Derby win.

“Our skills weren’t great against Port,” Papley said.

“It was pretty slippery and Port’s pressure was really good so credit to them. But this week we were leading up the ball-carrier a lot more and having Sam Reid back was good – he’s a handy player. With him in the side it’s a really good look for us with having him and Buddy.

“Then with Sinclair going forward and pushing their ruckman down forward it was great to see. With Will Hayward kicking a couple and Gary Rohan kicking a couple it also made a big difference.

“Lobb went down with a bit of a sore knee and Callum really took it to him and ran hard. To hit the scoreboard with three goals was really good for a ruckman and he’s really improved his marking. So it’s good to see him playing well.”

But Franklin didn’t depart the SCG without leaving Swans fans in awe.

The four-time Coleman Medallist banged home a pair of goals in the final quarter and the first earned a Goal of the Week nomination.

He collected an Isaac Heeney handball, palmed off Giants defender Nick Haynes and unloaded a soaring 70-metre cannon to put the crowd in raptures.

Papley says he is amazed at Franklin’s ability.

“There aren’t many players who can kick the goals Buddy kicked in the last quarter and sometimes you just shake your head and wonder at how good he is,” Papley said.

“I think the Giants were doing that in the last quarter and it’s certainly good to have him in the side.”
