Sydney Swans defender Callum Mills will notch up 50 senior games on Saturday but has his sights set on much loftier heights.
The 2016 AFL Rising Star will reach a half-century of games when the Swans meet the Western Bulldogs at Etihad Stadium in Round 4.
But he says the milestone pales in comparison to Sydney veteran Jarrad McVeigh reaching 300 games and is only focused on continuing to put his best foot forward for the team.
“I just want to keep playing as many games as I possibly can and good games for the club,” Mills said.
“The Swans have shown a lot of faith in me in giving me a lot of games and I want to repay that faith by playing well for the team.”
Mills was a QBE Sydney Swans Academy product and was recruited by the club in the 2015 National Draft with pick three.
At just 18 years of age, he wasted no time in stamping his credentials, debuting in Round 1 of 2016 against Collingwood and missing just five games across his first two seasons of AFL football.
The Mosman Football Club junior has developed into a highly courageous half-back whose performances under pressure is rare for a player of his age.
Mills said he owed his rise to the support he had received.
“I’m lucky that I’m at such a great club and that I’ve got people to look up to like McVeigh and Buddy Franklin,” Mills said.
“The Swans Academy was great too. It’s hard to say what I’d be doing if it wasn’t for the Academy. It was a super support and it helped me transition from Under 18s football into AFL football.”
Mills will become the third Swans player to reach 50 games this season after utility Dean Towers and forward George Hewett achieved the milestone in Round 1 and 2 respectively.
