As we continue our In the Blood series in the lead up to the 2017 season kicking off we catch up with Wonderland actor Tim Ross about his love for the red and white.
How I began supporting Sydney
Matthew Nicks was a great family friend of ours from Adelaide. We took a keen interest in his football career and all of a sudden found ourselves barracking for the Swans.
Earliest memories of going to the football
I can still remember the very first footy game my dad took me to at Football Park in Adelaide back in 1991 when I was only 6. Crows V Fitzroy. It was freezing cold and we were drenched under the pouring rain for the entire match but as a kid it was one of the most exciting nights of my life. I'd never experienced an atmosphere like that before. The Crows were down for most of the last quarter until David Marshal got a free kick and managed to put the Crows back on top before the siren. We went home wet but happy.
Favourite Swans moment
Has to be the 2005 Grand Final. We were trailing by 10 points in the last quarter, then hit the front and held on to win with Leo Barry's mark of the century right on the final siren to give us our first flag in 72 years by 4 points. That's a memory that's bloody hard to beat! I was at the game with Matthew Nick's father and I remember feeling terribly sorry for him that Matthew had only just missed out on playing in (and winning) this Grand Final. He had retired only a few months earlier after prolonged struggles with injury.
Favourite player
This may surprise some but it's #16 GARY ROHAN and here's why:
- Drafted by the Swans in 2009
- Debut 2010
- 2011 missed most of the year with hamstring injuries
- 2012 his season finished in round 4 with a broken leg
It's taken 6 years for Gaz to play 79 games but more importantly he played 18 in 2016. He's now aged 25, coming in to his prime and hopefully with the worst of his injuries behind him, he can ignite the forward line this year. I love his determination to overcome adversity. I love his hate of losing.
