Friday night’s last-gasp win at the SCG over Essendon will be one that Swans’ fans will remember for a long time.
Imagine if that was the first taste of AFL you had ever had and the first AFL match you got to witness live.
Well that was the case for 25-year old London rugby union player Jake Sharp who picked a pretty good night to head along to the SCG.
Sharp, who plays for London Scottish Football Club in English Rugby’s second-tier championship, is in Australia on his honeymoon with his wife Alice.
The pair ticked an item off their Australian bucket list after being recommended to take in an AFL game by locals.
“We wanted the experience of watching an AFL game whilst in Australia,” Sharp said.
“We saw that the Swans were playing and after talking to a few people in Sydney, who said we must go, we were excited to see what it was all about.
“I loved the energy and atmosphere on the walk to the game. Everyone was in good spirits.”
The pair were quick to embrace the Swans as their new favourite team after the incredible finish against the Bombers which saw the Club come from 19 points down with four minutes to go and win after the final siren.
“It was an amazing ending, a couple of shifts of momentum leading to the last-kick win made for incredible viewing,” Sharp added.
Being a high-level rugby player, Sharp also appreciated the skills and athleticism of the players in what was a physical affair.
“The AFL boys can definitely run, a lot more so than rugby, it is a lot more free-flowing," he said.
“The technical ability of the players to kick with such accuracy is brilliant and when the game gets physical it shows how tough the lads are.”
After hearing it was the english pair’s first ever AFL match, the Club also treated to newlyweds to the post-match function where they enjoyed some celebratory beverages and heard from assistant coach Henry Playfair and player Zak Jones.
“The experience was amazing and the Swans have definitely got two extra supporters from now on," Sharp said.
“It was brilliant to be taken in by a club on the other side of the world - that’s the reason I love sport so much."
