#swansintra is done for another season with the Red Team coming away with the chocolates over Team White in a solid hitout at Marrickville's Henson Park.
We caught up with both coaches, Henry Playfair (Red) and Brett Kirk (White), after the match to see what they took away from the Swan v Swan encounter ahead of the Club's JLT Community Series campaign.
Henry Playfair (Red)
What was the key thing you took away from the game?
"It's always important to get through without too many serious injuries, that was the most pleasing thing at the end of the game. You just want the boys to have a good hitout and no one to fall over at this stage of the year. We managed to do that even under pretty tough conditions due to the heat. Plus we got the win too, the Red Team, so that was extra pleasing."
Does the result matter at all?
"No, not really. Apart from a coffee between the coaches, that's about it. We're more looking at specific instances of play and how we could have done things better on both teams. They (intra-clubs) are always awkward to coach because if the Red Team does something well that means the White Team has broken down somewhere, so there's good and bad in every piece of play."
Who stood out for the Red Team?
"A few of our defenders were really rock solid - Lewis Melican, Nick Smith and Harry Marsh. Sam Reid looked really good, he's moving really well at the moment which is great to see after his poor run with injury last season. Sam Fisher was quite crafty up forward - kicked three goals and looked really neat with the ball. Ben Ronke's forward pressure was really impressive too."
Can you see someone like Ben Ronke have a Tom Papley-like season and burst onto the scene this year?
"We hope so. (Ronke) is a similar type. He's come in and made a real impact. The main thing is he gives you effort almost every piece of play which is a great foundation. How far he goes, we're not sure. Saying that, this time last year we had no idea what Papley would produce. It's the same with 'Ronks', it's hard to make a prediction so we'll just let itrun its course."
From what you saw in the younger crop are you excited for what they can produce against another team, in the form of North Melbourne on Sunday?
"Hopefully most of them will get their chance. We haven't discussed the team yet, we'll do that throughout the course of the week, but hopefully a few of our younger kids get a look in and we get to see them against another team. We've watched them over the pre-season but you still wonder how they'll perform against bigger bodies and other AFL players across the park"
Brett Kirk talks to his charges during quarter-time of Friday night's intra-club.
Brett Kirk (White)
What do you, as coaches, get out of intra-clubs?
"It's another step up in match simulation, we do a lot of it in our running block but an intra-club offers full ground and a strong focus on intensity and our ball movement both in offence and defence. We also get a look at playing some guys in different positions. We had quite a young midfield on the weekend and a number of our draftees had a look through there which is always good this time of year."
Do you hold them back at all in regards to intensity considering it's teammates against teammates, or do you just let them go?
"We just let them go. It's hard with competitive beasts to hold them back, other than the fact you're playing against your brothers so you don't want to hurt them too much. We manage in terms of preparation and during the game with all the protocols we have in place, it's more than enough to allow for that as well as have guys push themselves physically. This is where we want to test ourselves, over the next month, so we're ready for Round 1."
A couple of notable performances - Isaac Heeney was lively through the middle and up forward while Zak Jones provided plenty of zip when tried in the midfield.
"Yeah absolutely, we tried a few guys who usually play on the wings, in defence or forward. Even some of our young guys we tried inside as well. They showed something, all the guys who went through there. Callum Mills had a bit of look in there, Dan Robinson also, so it was a pretty young midfield. The future certainly looks good for us and putting pressure on the rest of the squad in regards to spots. We want that to be happening this time of the season. We want guys to feel that their spot isn't certain."
Is this a peek into what could happen throughout the season?
"Yeah, I think so. These days you need to have 8, 9 or 10 guys who can run through the midfield rotate through there while rest on the wing, in defence or up forward. They're all capable, all those guys who went through there today are capable."
John Longmire gets an insight from Kieren Jack during Friday night's #swansintra.
The final word...
John Longmire (senior coach)
How did you read Sam Reid's performance today?
"He moved really well and had a few shots on goal, and particularly in the first half he looked really dangerous. After not playing a lot of football last season, getting through a full game was obviously very important for him. He's been doing all of the (required) training now it's about putting that into a game situation. The more games he plays, obviously, the better he'll feel. He'll use the next few weeks to build that game time up."
Did you like the look of Zak Jones through the middle and is that where his future lies or will he still play half-back?
"Yeah, he's spent a lot of time training as a midfielder during the pre-season. It's another layer we can add to our midfield as he's really quick, he uses the ball really well and is prepared to take the game on. He'll still play there at different times. I think everyone gets a bit obsessed about who's midfield, forward or back - we'll play them where we need them. He's done a lot of work with our midfield but we know he can play down back. At the moment we'll be playing Kieren (Jack) a little more forward and 'Jonesy' a little more midfield, it offers us a different mix and looks to be working okay so far."
Were you pleased with Darcy Cameron's afternoon?
"Good. He's going okay. He's had a great pre-season, he's had to compete with Kurt (Tippett) and Kurt has completed all of the pre-season so Darcy gets tested every week. Sam Naismith and Callum Sinclair are just getting back into now, as far as training goes, so they'll be a couple of weeks behind those two but those two have going against each other this pre-season have done pretty well. He's a pretty good mark, plays well as a forward, has got good forward instincts. He's still learning the game but he looks okay at the moment."
Kieren (Jack) seems to be enjoying his move forward...
"We've always thought about putting him there a bit more, but we always resort back to leaving him in on the ball because he's been such a good midfielder for us. Jones in the midfield now adds an extra layer of speed and run and obviously with Tom Papley being out at the moment Kieren going forward gives us another viable option as that small forward with real speed and who can kick a goal. He could be hard to handle with his speed and natural forward instincts."
Did everyone get through unscathed?
"I think so. Harry Cunningham has a knock to the knee but other than that everyone got through okay."
