More family friendly timeslots and a Friday night blockbuster for Marn Grook at the SCG are the highlights of a bumper fixture for the Sydney Swans in season 2020.
The annual Marn Grook at the SCG clash, which has become a key event in Sydney celebrating Indigenous cultures, will see Sydney host Geelong on a Friday night to open Sir Doug Nicholls Round.
The Swans will kick off their 2020 premiership campaign against the Adelaide Crows at Adelaide Oval in Round 1, before returning home to face Essendon at the SCG under Friday night lights in Round 2.
Among the other clubs travelling to Sydney are Carlton, Collingwood, Hawthorn, the Western Bulldogs, North Melbourne, Fremantle, Gold Coast and Port Adelaide, while Sydney Derby XIX against GWS will be played in Round 5 at the SCG.
Of Sydney’s home games, four will be played during the day with the potential for a fifth in Round 23, which have been evenly spread throughout the season.
Away games will see Sydney travel to Melbourne six times to take on Hawthorn, Richmond, Carlton, Melbourne, Essendon and St Kilda for the annual Pride Game. Importantly, three of the Melbourne games are scheduled to be played at the MCG and three at Marvel Stadium.
Other away games will see the Swans head to Perth to tackle West Coast, visit Queensland twice to face the Suns and Lions, and head across the city for a second Sydney Derby against GWS.
Sydney Swans CEO Tom Harley says the 2020 fixture is a great result for members and supporters.
“Overall our 2020 fixture provides a balanced draw that has a little something for everyone,” Harley said.
“To kick off the AFL’s Sir Doug Nicholls Round with Marn Grook at the SCG is really important for our club, and we look forward to hosting Geelong in next year’s match.
“It will also be great to welcome some of the big-drawing Melbourne clubs to the SCG across a range of timeslots and days that will be sure to appeal to members and supporters alike.
“To have six games in Melbourne – three being at the MCG – is a terrific result for our club, as is returning to Western Australia, South Australia and Queensland.
“This year saw a record 61,912 members join the Swans family – and with a variety of new membership packages available we hope to build on that number in 2020.”
