After the disappointment of missing out on selection in the National Draft, Canberra local Sam Fisher quickly looked towards the rookie draft.
It was a nervous weekend for the 18-year-old as he awaited to find out his footballing future.
It was a couple of hours before the rookie draft that Fisher would find out his new home when Recruiting and List Strategy Manager Kinnear Beatson informed him the Swans would pre-select him as a Category B rookie.
“It was obviously pretty nerve racking and disappointing after Friday,” Fisher said.
“I was a bit disappointed on Saturday but then I talked to my manager and he said to just keep my head up.
“I have had a few chats to Kinnear so I was pretty hopeful that on Monday I would get my chance and in the end I did.”
He spent the weekend with family and close mates in Canberra where he grew up playing his junior football with Ainslie.
Fisher began his journey to Sydney on Monday afternoon before officially starting at the Club and meeting his new teammates on Tuesday.
“It has been unreal meeting all the boys and learning the program in terms of the weights and training,” he said.
“The professionalism of the club has been great so learning off the boys has been extraordinary.”
A member of the UWS Giants premiership team that defeated the Swans in the NEAFL Grand Final he is a silky left footer set to add further pace to the Swans forward line.
“As you would expect it is a bit odd coming to the arch nemesis being from the Giants,” he said.
“A few of the boys have got into me about it, but they are all kind-hearted jokes,”
“I like to think of myself as a clean half forward who can find space and use the ball well going into the forward line to hit up teammates.”
