Sydney Swans forward Ben McGlynn will wear a white arm band in Saturday’s match against Essendon in memory of Karen Belej.
Ms Belej was killed in tragic circumstances on Sunday inside at house at Cardross, a regional town in north-west Victoria.
McGlynn, from a neighbouring town and with close ties to the Belej family, expressed his desire to join others across the country in paying tribute to Ms Belej.
Ms Belej was a strong supporter and avid campaigner of the White Ribbon Campaign.
“Firstly I’d like to send my condolences to Karen’s family and close friends,” McGlynn said.
“The Belej family is well respected in the Coomealla community and Sunraysia region. Karen’s death has shocked everyone and it has also rallied everyone to support an issue that no women should suffer from – domestic violence.
“The wear 'White Arm Bands for Karen’ is a great initiative from her friends and the White Ribbon Foundation. It’s great to see all sporting clubs back home getting behind it and continuing the conversation about violence against women.
“I hope my small gesture of wearing the white arm band will help raise awareness about domestic violence but it’s also in memory of Karen and to show my support to her family.”
The Sydney Swans remain committed to supporting the White Ribbon Campaign.
Every year the Swans and GWS Giants play for the annual White Ribbon Cup to help raise awareness for Australia’s only male-led campaign to end violence against women.
