The Sydney Swans will put no limits on the type of player they want to select in the 2016 National Draft according to List and Strategy Manager Kinnear Beatson.
The Swans currently hold selections 17, 37, 55, 91 and 109 ahead of the current AFL trade period.
Some of the best youngsters in the country showcased their talent over the last three days at the National Draft Combine in Melbourne.
80 of the best young players took part in various physical and skill tests before meeting with clubs from Thursday to Sunday.
Beatson said the talent in this year’s draft was light on for key position players.
“It is a strong draft for midfielders especially at the top end,”
“If you compare drafts year on year this one is light on for key position and ruck stocks.”
“You go through the history of the draft and there are always players in the 30’s and 40’s that will go on and have really good careers.”
“It looks reasonably strong without being exceptional.”
Beatson said the Swans would remain open minded heading into next month’s draft to ensure they would draft the best available talent.
“History suggest that you have to be careful that you don’t lock yourself into a position type rather than be open minded on taking the best available talent.”
“Whether that be a tall, a running play, a key forward or whatever.”
“I think that is where you can make mistakes and overlook really talented players and so you just have to go back to the Luke Parker scenario of why he got to 40.”
