There are plenty of reasons to get along to the SCG this weekend, with the Swans and the Giants set to battle it out in Sydney Derby IX.
Coach John Longmire says the cross-town rivalry is great for footy in NSW.
“I was born in New South Wales and have been here for a long time and I can’t remember a time when it’s been so exciting to be part of AFL football in this town,” Longmire told SwansTV.
“It’s incredible the interest in it – it’s amazing – and the players are genuinely excited about playing against GWS.
“So it’s great for football in this town and great for our supporters to come along and watch two teams really going at it hammer and tong this weekend.”
Sydney Derby IX a battle of midfields
The Swans could regain Ben McGlynn for the clash after he pressed his case for selection in the NEAFL.
Fans will also have the chance to bid farewell to retired Swans champions Adam Goodes and Mike Pyke who will complete a lap of honour at half-time.
Meanwhile the game will be preceded by a Swans v Giants women’s curtain raiser, with the best female talent from across the state vying for a spot in the NSW/ACT representative side.
